Description of ASTM-F3743 2025ASTM F3743-25Active Standard: Standard Practice for Surface Wettability of BearingsASTM F3743Scope 1.1 This practice covers two practical methods of evaluating the wettability of rolling element bearing components or relevant ring surfaces, or both, by visual inspection following exposure to a liquid. 1.1.1 Finishing and manufacturing steps are unique to the bearing ring/rolling element; verification is carried out on the actual relevant bearing ring surfaces (primarily raceways) and rolling elements, rather than testing efficacy of the cleaning process by performing a wettability test on a coupon or other test item. 1.1.2 Wettability testing is meant to evaluate bearing surfaces for the likelihood to form and maintain a continuous film of lubricant. 1.2 Methods: 1.2.1 Method 1 provides a quantifiable method to determine bearing raceway surface wettability. 1.2.1.1 This method is intended as a laboratory type test for quantification and comparison purposes. 1.2.2 Method 2 provides a practical qualitative method to determine bearing surface wettability of completed bearing ring or rolling element. 1.2.2.1 This method is suitable to apply as acceptance testing for bearings components in production for use in high reliability and lube for life applications. 1.3 The liquid(s) selected for testing purposes should be: 1.3.1 Oil is used to determine wetting characteristics of that liquid on the bearing surface. Test oil to ideally be the final bearing lubricant, and 1.3.2 Solvents must be of reagent grade or better and compatible with the oil in test. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
