The classes of conduit shall be as follows: Class B, intended for use encased in concrete after installation; and Class C, intended for use without concrete encasement, or for exposed services. The conduits shall also be classified into two types (I and II) according to uncombined calcium hydroxide content. Materials shall conform to specified mechanical requirements such as flexural strength and crushing strength. This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date. A review of this guide is recommended prior to supplementing it, as appropriate, with the conditions and requirements of the owner and engineer. 1. Scope 1.1 This specification covers asbestos-cement conduit for use in electric-power systems and communication systems. The service is for both underground and exposed conditions. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values stated in parentheses are provided for information only. 1.3 Warning Breathing of asbestos dust is hazardous. Asbestos and asbestos products present demonstrated health risks for users and for those with whom they come into contact. In addition to other precautions, when working with asbestos-cement products, minimize the dust that results. For information on the safe use of chrysoltile asbestos, refer to Safe Use of Chrysotile Asbestos: A Manual on Preventive and Control Measures. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. See 1.3 for specific hazard warning.
