Synthetic Surfacing Design & Performance, 2023
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: SY-EN-173801-0523

The implementation of synthetic surfacing for leisure and performance applications is rapidly growing. Artificial materials such as synthetic turf (grass), synthetic green walls, and poured-in-place and court surfacing often outperform their natural counterparts. Additionally, increased safety standards and design expectations have accelerated innovation in the materials available to designers. This course outlines synthetic surfacing options and examines synthetic turf systems, detailing their design considerations, performance features, sustainability and health benefits, and associated return on investment (ROI).

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how various synthetic surfacing systems are constructed to suit the safety, drainage, durability, and aesthetic needs of specific applications.
  • Utilize the functional (impact attenuation and ADA compliance) and performance (heat reflection, fire resistance, antistatic, antimicrobial) properties of synthetic surfacing to develop safe, clean, and accessible places for outdoor activity and relaxation.
  • Specify synthetic turf to eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers, reduce water consumption and stormwater runoff, control site drainage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to lawn maintenance.
  • Use manufacturer resources and the design properties of synthetic surfacing materials related to color, texture, and shape to create unique, visually striking, and realistic installations for public, residential, and commercial applications.

Faculty BIO

Rob Dant's diverse upbringing in the military followed by a formal fine arts education eventually led to his career that embraces both visual and practical solutions for clients and customers. Highly creative, driven, and responsive to customers, he balances his role of growing small businesses and networks with his continued passion for environmentally responsible projects. Imbued with a love for balancing beauty and practicality, Mr. Dant presents an evenhanded approach to sustainable solutions involving synthetic turf. Addressing sustainable concerns such as erosion control, plant design, and usable space is a hallmark of his presentations. A seasoned speaker, he brings a deep knowledge of the industry, design concerns, and practicality to the forefront.

Bringing a decade of field and design experience, Colby Gingles enjoys engaging with the design and architect community and continuing to educate and push the boundaries of where synthetic turf can go.
