Current Approaches to Sustainable Community Planning, Part 2, 2024

AEC Daily The principles, tools, and techniques for sustainable community planning (SCP) outlined in Part 1 of this course have evolved into various approaches to the actual implementation of SCP around the world. These approaches have been developed in response to local context and in communities ranging in size and form from large cities to small ecovillages and housing clusters. Part 2 of this course describes a number of these approaches for both land and water and also suggests a means of integrating them into a single, comprehensive planning model. The course concludes with case studies of a range of built sustainable community examples and planning exercises and includes some of the lessons learned. 90 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and/or modify the SCP approaches that are most relevant to their planning contexts.
  • Capitalize upon the experiences of others in order to avoid some of the challenges associated with evolving approaches.
  • Integrate SCP approaches, tools, and techniques into a single, comprehensive planning model.
  • Develop community systems that improve environmental, social, and economic performance.

Faculty BIO

Doug operated a number of architectural practices in Toronto for 25 years before joining the CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Canada's national housing agency) in 1998. His practices prioritized projects incorporating user participation and effective use of resources and finances, earning several sustainable design awards and a lifetime achievement award. CMHC roles included 12 years as a senior researcher in sustainable community development and 3 years as a senior analyst for the international division. Both roles included giving lectures and presentations on sustainable communities, the organization and facilitation of design charrettes across Canada and abroad, and workshops and manuals on charrette and IP development. Doug also developed design tools, community development programs, and educational materials related to green buildings and sustainable communities.
