Metal Roof Design: Top 10 Problems and How to Solve Them, 2024
CEU: 0.125 | CEU Code: MC-EN-158702-1224

Due to their durability, low operational cost, and sustainability, metal roofs are gaining popularity in both commercial and residential markets. Owner expectations for this product family have increased as well and now include heightened aesthetics and long-term performance. While metal roofing systems are certainly up to these challenges, when they fail, the results are costly. Consequently, it is imperative designers have full knowledge of metal roof design and detailing. This course covers the top ten problems metal roof designers face and describes how these problems can be prevented through proper design.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe internal gutter issues and how to prevent them.
  • Recall methods to prevent water infiltration at valleys, penetrations, roof slope transitions, and end laps.
  • List curb selection considerations and recommended installation methods.
  • Describe five methods of retrofitting an existing metal roof and their design considerations.
  • Describe the specification requirements that can reduce or eliminate perceivable oil canning.
  • List metal roof selection considerations.

Faculty BIO

Brian Gardiner has practiced roof consulting for over 30 years. He is a past director of both RCI, Inc. Region IV (1995-98) and the Building Envelope Institute, Inc. (2005-06). Brian has presented numerous metal roofing-related seminars for RCI, Inc. and other associations. He has specified and provided detail drawings on millions of square feet of metal roofing.

Charlie Smith is widely recognized as the industry's foremost authority on re-cover systems utilizing metal roofing. Charlie holds several patents in the re-cover field, including both metal-over-metal and metal-over-shingle solutions. As an industry leader, Charlie recently co-wrote the new RCI metal roofing course with Brian Gardiner, who is a frequent presenter at RCI and other roofing industry events.

Charlie Smith founded Architectural Building Components in 1989 when he purchased the equipment of a small metal roofing manufacturing business based in Houston, Texas. Over the next 23 years, the company grew into an industry-leading metal roofing and wall system solution provider, specializing in the use of metal to re-cover existing low-slope roofs. In 2012, Architectural Building Components became a part of McElroy Metal, which enabled Charlie to focus on educational and product development efforts to help the roofing industry design creative solutions with metal.
