Exterior wall systems are the dividing line between the exterior and the interior and must address several fundamental performance goals of the building envelope. This course reviews traditional rainscreen design and examines why, with its single-component construction, an insulated composite backup wall system is a vast improvement over traditional multicomponent building technology.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the performance fundamentals of wall design by examining the history of rainscreen wall design.
  • Summarize the main attributes of an ideal backup wall system by reviewing the traditional multicomponent backup wall assembly and its design challenges in relation to thermal efficiency, installation, and long-term performance.
  • Explain how the design of the insulated composite backup wall system overcomes the shortcomings of traditional assemblies, contributing to ease of installation, insulating capability, and longevity.
  • Evaluate the benefits of insulated composite backup panels in terms of their sustainability, energy efficiency, and design flexibility by examining case studies that illustrate how they can integrate with virtually any rainscreen material to provide an airtight envelope.

Faculty BIO

Currently serving as the Definitions Committee Co-Chair for the Rainscreen Association in North America, Andrew has spent the last decade specializing in rainscreen systems and building enclosure. He has assisted in the design and development of innovative rainscreen assemblies, trained dozens of installers on how to handle, fabricate, and install various types of materials and systems, and provided hundreds of hours of continuing-education AIA courses centered around building science and rainscreen concepts.
