The Design Advantages of Synthetic Roofing Solutions, 2023
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: DV-EN-142202-0524

Synthetic roofing materials have been available in the market for more than a decade, providing a cost-effective, viable alternative to traditional slate and shake roofing systems. This course provides an overview of the features and benefits of slate and shake synthetic roofing products, including a discussion on the testing methods used to rate specific performance characteristics.

Learning Objectives

  • List the green features of virgin-engineered polymer synthetic roofing materials that combine to make them a good environmental choice.
  • State the design and architectural benefits of specifying a synthetic roofing solution including how synthetic products can contribute to LEED point certification and the ENERGY STAR program.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of traditional roofing materials including clay tile, concrete tile, metal, and asphalt (in terms of aesthetics, cost, life span, fire rating, durability, weight, and hail resistance) versus synthetic products.
  • Discuss the durability and long life cycle of synthetic roofing materials including the various testing methods (including fire, impact, wind uplift, accelerated weathering, freeze/thaw, and water absorption) and approvals (ICC-ES and Miami-Dade) related to roofing materials.

Faculty BIO

Tim Gentry is Vice President of Technical Services for DaVinci Roofscapes and has 40 years of roofing experience. Because of his expertise and high level of knowledge with premium roofing material, Tim was brought onboard at the inception of DaVinci Roofscapes. Tim has in-depth knowledge of engineered polymers, steep slope roofing, and the polymer tile market, and plays a key role aiding in the design and technical process of DaVinci tiles.
