Musical Playgrounds: Inclusive Learning and Play, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: BC-EN-132002-0923

Play and music are both essential parts of our lives. When we can combine music and play together in a fun and engaging space, the benefits are numerous, no matter your age. This course discusses why play and music education perform such a critical role in the development of happy, healthy children. We'll discuss the copious amounts of research that tell us that music education has real-life benefits, such as increased IQ, language development, and social engagement, and the role music plays within multiple therapies for the elderly and those suffering from mental illnesses. The course finishes with an overview of how to design musical play spaces for safety and inclusivity.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe what musical playgrounds are including who they are for and why play performs a vital part of human health and vitality, especially for children.
  • Describe the benefits of music education for children and adults, such as language development and community engagement, and the role music can play in various therapies, such as for autism, dementia, and overall mental health.
  • Discuss the various outdoor musical instruments available for use in playgrounds and play spaces, what they do, and how their features, such as ADA accessibility, can be utilized for the benefit of all.
  • Explain how to design and implement musical playgrounds that meet safety standards to ensure the health and safety of participants.
