Mass Timber: How to Start a Project in the Right Direction, 2024
CEU: 0.125 | CEU Code: WW-EN-194902-0225

The trend toward building withmass timber across the US and beyond is accelerating, requiring design professionals to understand the why, when, and how of designing a mass timber structure. The industry is dynamic and evolving along with the building codes that dictate mass timber system requirements and limits. This course identifies the considerations a designer should review before starting a mass timber project, including feasibility, trade partnering, material selection, building codes, logistics, and their overall impact on creating a successful mass timber project.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how mass timber building materials are durable and sustainable and have a low carbon footprint.
  • Discuss how prefabricated mass timber posts, beams, and panels reduce construction waste and their light weight decreases transportation costs compared to concrete, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Explain which 2021 International Building Code building types are approved for mass timber construction and identify the required fire code regulations for each type.
  • Summarize the main design considerations when selecting mass timber construction, including scheduling and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) logistics.

Faculty BIO

For over 20 years, I have focused on helping people build in wood and, most recently, in mass timber. I love providing customers with a full mass timber package, from initial budgeting, preconstruction scheduling, and design assistance to a full scope of materials, fabrication, and installation! My background is in teaching, and although I'm no longer in front of the class, I still spend my days spreading my knowledge and expertise as best as I possibly can.

It's exciting to be at the forefront of innovation and positive environmental change, helping create the best teams and bringing clients' dreams to life. Mass timber building in the US is a new development, and I'm committed to being with designers and builders every step of the way to make them successful.

My philosophy is to listen and focus on what people need. It may be just running a quick calculation to determine the adequacy of a grade of CLT or providing an initial budget for a turnkey mass timber package.

What a great opportunity I have to be part of amazing teams and build a sustainable future for our kids.

If you find yourself starting out on a mass timber project, let's talk!
