Content Description

Advances in Sustainability with Spray Polyurethane Foam, 2023
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: BA-EN-186402-0725

No discussion about a material's sustainability is complete unless it addresses embodied carbon, the carbon dioxide (CO') emissions associated with the material over its cradle-to-grave life cycle. Changes made to spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation formulations address the impacts of embodied carbon. This course explores the evolution and environmental impacts of SPF blowing agents, the performance benefits of SPF, physical property testing and certifications, and SPF's potential LEED v4 contributions. Case studies make evident the performance value of SPF.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the evolution of blowing agents used in spray polyurethane foam insulation and their environmental impacts relating to ozone depletion and global warming'.
  • Summarize the benefits of SPF insulation and roofing systems pertaining to thermal performance and energy use, air barrier performance, moisture resistance, interior comfort and indoor air quality, and ease and speed of construction.
  • State the value and use of SPF environmental product declarations and how EPDs and SPF's low-VOC content, bio-content, and mold resistance meet environmental program criteria and can potentially contribute to LEED v4 credits.
  • Identify how SPF contributes to desirable green building attributes and exceeds code compliance, citing real-world project examples where SPF insulations and roofing systems are improving the sustainability and resilience of homes and buildings.

Faculty BIO
